Who can appear for JEE Advanced?
JEE Advanced is the gateway to the IITs. To appear, you must first rank among the top candidates in JEE Main. A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced a maximum of two times in two consecutive years, so plan your attempts carefully.
Exam pattern
The exam consists of two compulsory papers (Paper 1 and Paper 2), each covering Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. Both papers are held on the same day and both must be attempted. The paper style changes year to year — expect a mix of single-correct, multiple-correct, numerical-value, and matching questions, with negative marking on several sections.
A realistic preparation timeline
12+ months out — Build NCERT-level fundamentals first. JEE Advanced punishes weak basics more than any other exam.
6–12 months out — Move to advanced problem practice. Previous-year JEE Advanced papers are the single best resource; solve at least 10 years of them.
3–6 months out — Join a structured test series. Analyse every mock: classify mistakes as concept gaps, silly errors, or time-pressure errors, and fix them separately.
Final 3 months — Stop learning new topics. Revise, attempt full-length mocks in real exam time slots, and protect your sleep schedule.

Tip for parents: A dropper year is a serious decision. Discuss it with your child's current teachers and look at their JEE Main percentile trend before committing to a repeater batch.
